Witnesses said that the incident which happened around noon sent both customers and staff of the bank scampering for safety.

Though, the news that first filtered from the scene was that the robbers had attacked the bank.

A staff of the bank who spoke on the condition of anonymity said that the victim was rushed to a private hospital in the area where he was treated.

He said that the shooting caused panic inside the banking hall and the area as people ran for cover.

Lagos State Police Public Relations, Chike Oti, who confirmed the attack, said that the victim apparently must have gone to the bank to carry out some financial transactions.

Oti said that the man was on his way out of the bank when he saw a friend who was riding on a bike.

He said that while the victim was discussing with his friend, two men on a motorcycle cornered him and demanded the bag containing the cash.

He said: “The man refused and ran towards the bank probably to seek refuge, but the robbers trailed him close to the bank and shot him in the leg and went away with the bag.”
He said it was not a bank robbery as was being speculated adding that the police were on the trail of the hoodlums.
