Rohr doesn’t regret dropping Iheanacho from AFCON 2019 squad

Super Eagles Head Coach Gernot Rohr has explained his decision to leave out Kelechi Iheanacho for the 2019 AFCON, describing it as “objective” because the player was “low on confidence”.

Both Iheanacho and Semi Ajayi were left out of the 23-man list for the AFCON after thorough consultations with his coaching staff, Rohr explained.

Speaking on Ajayi’s situation, Rohr stated that it was down to either the player or captain Mikel Obi in the midfield and the choice was unanimous – despite Mikel’s absence since the world cup.

‘We had soo many good strikers, that we had to put away a striker and also a defensive midfielder; Obi Mikel coming back has been well integrated in the group so we had to put out our player Semi Ajayi and also one striker, who is missing a little bit confidence.

‘It was very difficult to decide but everybody in my staff; we are five people, we agreed about the two names.

‘So, I think this decision was very objective because it was never a good decision to take, but we had to do it and we did it and the two players had very good professional attitude and accepted this decision.’
