Smugglers kill newly wedded Customs officer on duty in Oyo

Smugglers have killed a newly wedded customs officer attached to the Operation Border Drill by the Nigeria Customs Service at Oyo State.

Since the Federal Government introduced the operation in 2019, scores of Customs officers have lost their lives to a gun battle with diehard smugglers, even as the figure keeps rising almost every month.

Pictures of the lifeless officer whose identity is yet to be made known by the Customs authorities were circulated online, even as videos of Customs officers and SARS Team of the Nigerian Police were seen arguing fiercely over who should take credit for dislodging the smugglers.

Even though the customs are yet to come up with an official statement, sources, however, confirmed the incident that happened on August 12, along with Oyo-Saki Axis, and generated a lot of uproar and alterations between Officers of Customs and SARS Operatives on who actually over-powered the smugglers.

Vehicles were however seen parked by the roadside, abandoned by the smugglers while Customs officers and SARS officials fight over the keys to the vehicle.

Sources said the young officer was killed by smugglers .

The SARS Operatives fire power however, reportedly made the smugglers to abandon the smuggled cars and headed for the bush.

Public Relations Officer of Oyo/Osun Customs Command, W Kayode, said: “You just have to remain calm pending when the full investigation is done and something can be giving out.

“We can’t give any information now be we need to investigate to know what really happened. Pls just remain calm. We can’t rush to press when we now start to have agendium and corrigendum for one thing or the other.”
