Super Eagles players get Gov. Okowa’s $50,000 for disallowed goals

ASABA – Delta State Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, on Tuesday evening redeemed his pledge of $25,000 per goal scored by the team in the Johannesburg game last weekend.

It would be recalled that the Governor promised to reward the team for number of goals they scored against the South Africans before they left for Johannesburg, venue of the game.

Although, the clash ended 1:1 with Eagles only goal of the coming from an own goal, after referee Papa Gassama had wrongly ruledout what seems to two good goal for an offside.

However, Okowa decided to reward the players with the sum of $50,000 for the two goals that was not given by the officials after television replay showed otherwise.

Governor Okowa , said at a state banquet held in honour of the team after the friendly match against Uganda on Tuesday night, that the Super Eagles performance was enough to earn them maximum points from the weekend clash in Johannesburg.

“As a state government, we did make a promise to give $25,000 per goal in the AFCON qualifying match in South Africa (and) in my mind, I know we scored two goals, not one goal; because the second goal was wrongly disallowed

 

“So, we will fulfil our promise with what we saw, not with what was announced by the referee.” he stated.

Meanwhile, Eagles stand in captain, Ahmed Musa, on behalf of the team thanked the Governor for the gesture.

 

“We will love to come back here again and on behalf of my team mates, we say thank you,” Musa said
