Suspected herdsmen hack another Bayelsa farmer to death

Palpable tension has gripped the Okordia community in Yenagoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa State over the killing of another farmer by suspected herdsmen.

Herdsmen had recently killed one Alexander Diri in the Yambiri community, Zarama clan, while working in his farm.

The killing had triggered massive protest and blockade of the East-West Road, forcing the Bayelsa State government, through the Commissioner for Education, Dr Gentle Emelah, an indigene of the area and the Chairman, Bayelsa State Livestock Management Committee, Chief David Alagoa, who also doubles as the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, to appeal to the people for calm.

Investigation revealed that the latest victim of the herdsmen attack, Chief Bob Wilson, aged 40 years, was in his farm working, when he was attacked and killed. The death of Wilson, who was the deputy-chief of the community, has heightened tension in the area as youths are spoiling for reprisal.

Findings indicated that emissaries from the state government have been sent to the community to plead for calm.

The Bayelsa State Police Command confirmed the incident and said its detectives had visited the scene and an investigation has commenced.

“On March 20, 2023, one Chief Bob Wilson, 49 years of age, was allegedly killed by suspected herdsmen at Okumoni forest, Okordia. Police detectives have visited the scene and evacuated the body to the mortuary for autopsy. Investigation is on-going,” the police said.

The Bayelsa State government was one of the first states in Nigeria to sign the anti-open grazing law prohibiting cattle from encroaching on farmlands. It also set up the Bayelsa State Livestock Management Committee, headed by Chief Alagoa as the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, to enforce the law.

However, Bayelsans have not been impressed with the work of the committee following repeated encroachment on farmlands and killings of Bayelsans by suspected herdsmen.
