The rise of 20-year-old taekwondo star Lauren Williams, who won her first world title aged six

Williams, from South Wales, started out in Kickboxing which she practiced for ten years and won her first world title aged six. Under her Kickboxing belt, she has won 12 World Championships, 20 European Championships, 3 full contact title belts in Kickboxing.

In search of a bigger challenge, she switched to Taekwondo aged 13, after watching Olympic gold medallist in the women’s 57 kg category, Jade Jones win Olympic gold in 2012 and spent two years living in a caravan so she could be closer to GB Taekwondo’s Manchester base.

In December 2018, Lauren Williams then 19-year-old won more than £54,000, which was part of the largest prize fund in the history of the sport, which she promised to use to help her parents pay off their mortgage after winning gold at the World Taekwondo Grand Slam finals in China.

Williams is a world junior and double European senior champion but rates this as her finest achievement in the -67kg category. “I think this is the biggest win of my career, I want to say a massive thanks to my family back home. They’ve invested everything, their time, their money, absolutely everything to make sure I achieve Olympic gold.”

Williams who has a wide interest in sport loves football, netball, rugby, hockey, basketball, and swimming. Having won Gold at the 2016/2018 European Championships, and gold at the Junior World Championships in 2014/2016, her ambition is to become European, World and Olympic gold medallist in Taekwondo.

Williams is part of a 15-strong British squad competing at the World Championships in Manchester from 15-19 May 2019 hoping to qualify for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
