They’re fighters! Former Liverpool goalkeeper describes Nigerian teammates

Club Brugge goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has described David Okereke, Dennis Emmanuel and other teammates as “fighters” after the club secured a narrow 1-0 win away to LASK Linz in the UEFA Champions League final qualifying round.

Mignolet, who made his UCL debut for Brugge since joining from Liverpool, kept a clean sheet against the Austrian side and has credited the team’s fighting spirit for the Tuesday’s outcome.

The 31 year-old told the club’s website, “We knew before the start of the match that LASK would put a lot of pressure from the first minute. Yet we were quite surprised in the beginning by their persistent attack waves.

“Fortunately, the club’s first dangerous attempt was immediately hit and we captured a nice starting position thanks to the penalty. For the rest it was mostly ninety minutes of fighting and trying to keep the zero. A second goal was certainly still possible, but I think this is an excellent result.

“We saw today how strong Linz was. They are strong in the duels and put high pressure. Club had to count on fighters on the pitch for ninety minutes today. LASK has nothing to lose next week and will open all registers from the beginning. Wednesday we should like today just display everything.”
