UCL: Real Madrid Survive Juventus Scare To Reach Semis, Bayern Advance

Real Madrid qualified for the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League 4-3 on aggregate after losing 3-1 to Juventus in the second leg of their quarter-final tie at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a controversial penalty in added time to send Real Madrid through to yet another semi-final.

Croatia forward Mario Mandzukic scored a brace for Juventus while Blaise Matuidi scored their third goal.

Mandzukic scored a second minute header to give Juventus a bright start in Madrid.

The goal was the third of the campaign in the UEFA Champions League.

Mandzukic scored his team’s second goal with another header in the 37th minute from the same spot as he did with his opener but this time from a Stephan Lichtsteiner cross.

At half time, Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane brought on Lucas Vázquez and Marco Asensio for Gareth Bale and Casemiro.

The substitution forced Juventus into defending as Real Madrid began to dictate the pace of the game.

But in the 63rd minute, a error from Keylor Navas saw Maituidi score Juventus’ third goal to make it 3-3 on agreggate.

However, English referee Michael Oliver controversially awarded Real Madrid a penalty as the tie was heading to extra-time. He also gave Juventus captain Gianluigi Buffon a red card for protesting excessively.

Ronaldo coolly despatched the spot kick to send Real through.

In the other quarter-final at the Allianz Arena in Germany, Bayern Munich advanced to the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League by edging Sevilla 2-1 on aggregate after playing out a goalless draw on Wednesday.

The barren draw was the first home game in Bayern Munich’s last 22 matches in the competition that the Bavarian had failed to score.

After a goalless first half which produced two yellow cards, Bayern remained compact as they saw out a comfortable draw to reach the semi-finals

Sevilla’s Joaquin Correa was sent off for a needless tackle on the touchline in the stoppage time of the encounter.

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich join Liverpool and Roma in the Champions League semi-finals draw on Friday.
