UEFA Super Cup: Despite VAR controversy, Oliseh scores Referee Frappart high

She made history on Wednesday when she became the first woman to referee the final of a UEFA men’s competition, albeit not without controversy, Stéphanie Frappart and her assistants have earned praise from former Nigeria captain and Coach, Sunday Oliseh.

Frappart was as decisive as she was in control of the game. Doing a great job as Liverpool and Chelsea slugged it out for 120 minutes in the 2019 UEFA Super Cup.

However, the game was not without controversy, as Frappart and VAR – the latter featuring for the first time in the competition.

Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian was off his line before Chelsea forward Tammy Abraham even kicked the ball.

The French match official and her entire team missed a decisive moment in the game – which literally handed Liverpool the Super Cup – but Oliseh believes they deserve commendation for their performance.

He tweeted:

Bravo!! Extremely impressed with the refereeing yesterday #LIVCHE By first ever female referee, Stephanie Frappart @ the #SuperCup Always close to the action, authoritative, precise and just added something positive to this highly contested encounter. Football needs more like her!

Liverpool defeated Chelsea 5-4 on penalties after the sides were tied 2-2 after extra time.
