Unai Emery explains why he substituted Alex Iwobi at half-time against Wolves

Arsenal boss Unai Emery has revealed that his decision to replace Super Eagles forward Alex Iwobi at half-time versus Wolves was for tactical reasons.

Iwobi was among the substitutes as Arsenal drew with Liverpool last weekend but the 22-year-old was picked over Henrikh Mkhitaryan in Emery’s starting XI against Nuno Espirito Santo’s side at the Emirates.

However, Iwobi was only on the field for 45 minutes as Emery replaced the Nigerian with youngster Matteo Guendouzi for the second half.

The match ended in a draw as Mkhitaryan found a late equalizer for the Gunners and Emery explained his decision to substitute Iwobi after the final whistle.

‘Tactically it was a change. I was thinking of having more possession inside,’ the Spaniard said.

Emery was impressed with the reaction of his players in the second half after going behind to an early Wolves goal.

He explained: ‘We spoke about how it was difficult to break their lines defensively and their transition was very good.
