Why Mohamed Salah won’t be banned for diving vs Newcastle

Liverpool’s 4-0 win against Newcastle United on Boxing day wasn’t without controversy around star man Mo Salah.

Newcastle were upset with Liverpool’s second goal of the game, scored by Mohamed Salah from the penalty spot.

Salah won the spot-kick after a coming together with Paul Dummett.

Dummett laid a hand on Salah’s arm as the Egyptian tricked his way through the Magpies’ box.

But Salah went down theatrically.

Salah’s behaviour against Newcastle has been compared to when Oumar Niasse dived for Everton to win a penalty against Crystal Palace last season.

Niasse was slapped with a two game ban for his actions.

Yet it’s been confirmed on Thursday morning that Salah will not face any punishment.

The Times journalist Paul Joyce has explained that the “FA say it did not meet threshold for deception of a match official”.
