Why we removed political posters - LASAA boss . Edgal threatens to deal with political thugs

The Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency, (LASAA), yesterday, took responsibility for the removal of campaign billboards and posters of candidates of political parties in the state, attributing its action to failure by the affected candidates to obtain its permission.

The explanation is coming on the heels of several complaints by candidates of opposition parties that their posters and billboard were pulled down and replaced with those of the All Progressive Congress, APC.

This is just as the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Imohimi Edgal, threatened to deal with any thug, particularly members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), who allowed himself to be used by politicians. Speaking at a Security/ Stakeholders meeting between the Police and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission,( INEC) candidates of different political parties, the General Manager, LASAA, Mr. Mobolaji Sanusu, states emphatically that only members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) obtained permission from the agency before mounting their billboards and posters in the state.

He noted that the rules governing the agency prohibited pasting of posters anywhere in the state without its permission, adding that some of the billboards and posted removed were also as a result of failure on the part of the affected candidates to partake in the cleanup exercise of the state. He said ” the agency will not be deterred in its task of keeping the state clean and as such, all billboards and posters mounted illegally will be removed While addressing the stakeholders, convener of the meeting, Edgal, said “Lagos State is politically matured.

The removal of billboards and posters could not have been an intentional act and that is why I have invited the LASAA MD to be here today in order to clear the air on the issue.” He explained that one of the reasons for calling for the meeting was a sequel to complaints about the destruction of political party posters and billboards.

He, therefore, warned politicians against arming thugs, disclosing that information at his disposal revealed that some members of the NURTW were being armed to cause unrest if the election result did not favour their candidates. On his part, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Lagos state, Mr Sam Olumekun, who disclosed that 64 political parties were registered, advised candidates to focus on issues based campaigns instead of campaigns that could result to violence.

He assured that INEC on its part would ensure a free, fair and credible election but was quick to add that such could only be achieved in a peaceful and conducive environment. However, during deliberation, other parties accused LASAA of bias, stressing that it favored the ruling APC more than other parties in the state.
