Nigeria Table-Tennis Legend Announces Retirement Date

Nigerian Table-Tennis Funke Oshonaike has announced she will retire from the sport after the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo – Her 7th Olympic if she qualifies.

Funke Oshonaike whose national team appearance for Nigeria spans over a decade is one of the most decorated table-tennis player in the country.

 

The 43-year-old stunned many when she qualified and eventually represented Nigeria – even as flag bearer – at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.

 

Speaking on her future Oshonaike per ITTF Nigeria Open was quoted as setting a deadline on her further participation in the sport that brought her limelight.

 

“I am looking forward to the 2019 African Games with the sole aim of qualifying for the 2020 Olympics in Japan. I’ll be on top of the world if i qualify because that will be the last time I’ll play table tennis and after the Olympics I’ll throw in the towel.”
