2018 FIBAACCW: Elephant Girls face Big Test in Semi-final

The four best teams at the FIBA Africa Women’s Champions Cup 2018 were determined on Friday in Maputo, Mozambique and they will do battle in Saturday’s Semi-Finals to set up the matchup for Sunday’s title game.

After a week on intense competition, the ten-team competition is now to four.

FERROVIARIO DE MAPUTO (Mozambique) v FIRST BANK BASKETBALL (Nigeria)

Ever since Ferroviario de Maputo accepted the hosting duties of this year’s ACCW, the Mozambicans made it clear that only the top prize matters.

However, the hosts face an uphill task to beating Nigerian champions First Bank Basketball, who similarly chase the top step of the podium.

With some of the top performers on their rosters, this is clearly the highly-anticipated clash of the day.

The Nigerians reached the Semi-Final undefeated in five games, but they needed to bring their A game to get the better of a very combative FAP team in the Quarter-Finals and get away with a 69-66 win.

Alexandra Green has been fundamental for the Cameroonian side throughout the competition, averaging more than 14 points and three assists per game, however, missing two free throws with 35 seconds that could have given FAP a 68-67 lead, may have defined her team’s Quarter-Finals feat.

The last time these two teams faced off in the ACCW 2015 in Luanda, the Nigerians prevailed 63-60 in the Group Phase, although Ferroviario came up stronger in the Third-Place Game with a 71-54 triumph.

INTERCLUBE LUANDA (Angola) v VITA CLUB (DR CONGO)

The Angolans are yet to taste a defeat at ACCW 2018 and on Friday the most successful African club repeated their dominance, dispatching Malagasy side MB2All 84-46.

It’s the five-time ACCW winners’ tenth Semi-Final appearance dating back to 2009.

Meanwhile, Vita Club who registered a modest 1-3 mark in the Group Phase stunned fellow Congolese INSS 70-43 to reach the Last Four in the competition history.
