From maintenance man’s son to Tennis Pro- Frances Tiafoe

Frances Tiafoe at 21years has lifted his family through his steady climb up the world ranking, Having vaulted to a career-high No. 30 after reaching his first Grand Slam quarterfinal in the 2019 Australia open.

 

QTiafoe now believes that a top-20 ranking is possible by year’s end. Since turning pro at age 17, buying his parents a house in Beltsville, He has raised his own sights.

 

Frances Tiafoe is an American professional tennis player ( born January 20, 1998). He is the fourth-youngest player ranked in the ATP top 50, claiming his first tour title at the Delray Beach ATP tournament.

 

He and his twin brother Franklin were born in Maryland to Constant and Alpina Tiafoe who immigrated from Sierra Leone to escape the civil war in their home country. A young Tiafoe spent many of his boyhood nights, sleeping on the floor of a spare office in Maryland alongside his father and twin brother.

 

In 1999 with family finances stretched, Tiafoe’s father joined a construction crew working on the Junior Tennis Champions Centre (JTCC) near Washington DC.

 

Constant Tiafoe was made the centre’s maintenance man when it was completed and he turned the centre into his family residence which the club’s management kept quiet and even giving his twins top-quality tennis tuition for the inquisitive.

 

As his story spread, sponsors signed up, agents circled and what was a disadvantage, in part at least, paid back as an advantage.

 

Frances became the second-youngest American man to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal since Andy Roddick, 20, made it to the Wimbledon semifinals in 2003. Tiafoe said he could barely talk. “I started crying and it’s kind of just a surreal moment for me, my family, everything I’ve been through,”.

 

If Frances Tiafoe’s background inspired him, it also has the power to do the same for others.
