Former Manchester City and Flying Eagles midfielder, Tom Dele-Bashiru, has revealed why he decided to represent Nigeria, ahead of England.
The new Watford signing was part of the Nigerian squad to the 2019 FIFA U20 World Cup after previously played for his country of birth at the U14 and U16 level.
While speaking to his new club official website on his decision to switch allegiance to Nigeria, Bashiru said he stand a chance of featuring in the Nigerian main team regularly than that of the English due to tough competition for a place in the three lions squad.
“I just felt like I’ll probably play the first team with the Super Eagles, more likely than playing for England because England has a lot of players to choose from.
“Obviously it is my home nation so it was good to play for them.
“I am very proud of my roots, I try and embrace it. I paint a good picture so that people understand what it is to be a Nigerian,” he told Watford’s official website.
Bashiru has spent his entire career with Manchester City but ended his association with the club when he signed a five years contract with Watford in this current transfer window.
He also scored for the Flying Eagles 4-0 win over Qatar at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland.
