Guardiola Reveals New Manchester City Captain & Assistants

Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola held a ballot of his players to decide who would take over from Vincent Kompany.

David Silva will be the new Manchester City captain after the players voted for a replacement or Vincent Kompany.

The veteran Blues star topped the squad poll, while Fernandinho, Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero will all be part of the leadership group.

Guardiola insisted that the players had to elect the captain, as they needed a leader who could liaise between the players and the manager.

Silva took the armband for the Community Shield last week, as the senior player in the squad, but the vote did not take place until this week, as Fernandinho had not returned to training.

It will be a change of leadership style for City, after Kompany’s strong, vocal, demanding personality.

Silva is much quieter as an individual but is hugely respected by the squad, and Guardiola feels that the harmony in the dressing room means that his approach will be fine.

“David Silva will be our captain,” confirmed Guardiola.

“Fernandinho, Kevin [De Bruyne] and Sergio [Aguero]. The captain has to be what he is. David has been here a decade, he knows the club, the Premier League and has so much respect.

“He has to be himself, David has to be himself, make decisions for the team. Normally it depends what the captain is like when the locker room are nice guys, they know each other, they laugh a lot. It will not be a problem. He will be a good captain.”
