Brian Idowu or Jamilu Collins – who should get the nod for Eagles’ Left back role?

Gernot Rohr surprised Nigeria fans with the inclusion of an uncapped defender Jamilu Collins ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier away to Seychelles.

However, World Cup defender and Russian-based Brian Idowu kept the German-based Collins on the Substitute bench in the encounter against Seychelles.

From the public perception, Brian Idowu has not done anything spectacular in all his Super Eagles caps to show he is really capable of manning the left back position.

He has been caught unaware by opposing wingers, lost concentration, found out of position, lacking speed, with almost zero-pull out ability from the left wing while attacking.

As such, a natural left back in the person of Elderson Echiejile will always be ahead of Brian every day.

The timing of Collins’ invitation appears to suit him best, as he could be a direct replacement for Echiejile and possibly provide the natural width and balance the right-footed full-back options have struggled to provide the Eagles.

Although Coach Gernot Rohr is known to be a loyalist to some of his trusted players, Brian Idowu is one, but I am of the opinion that this is the time for Collins to get a chance.

Meanwhile, in a Goal publication, former Super Eagles Striker Jonathan Akpoborie has also stressed that Jamilu Collins is good enough to be Nigeria’s first-choice at left-back and should be playing ahead of Brian Idowu.

The Super Eagles will hope to get a positive result in their doubleheader fixture against the Mediterranean Knights as they look to get to pole position in Group E.
