CAF okays VAR for Champions League and Confederation Cup Finals

CAF have signed off on the use of the Video Assistant Referees (VAR) for the finals of the season’s CAF Interclubs competitions; CAF Champions League 2018 and CAF Confederation Cup 2018.

The decision was reached by the Body’s Executive Committee at its meeting last month in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

VAR was first tested during the CAF Super Cup between Wydad Athletic Club and TP Mazembe in February at the Stade Mohammed V, Casablanca.

“This is a historic moment for African football. It clearly shows that CAF is determined and committed to the inter club competitions and will bring on board the latest and innovative technologies to make it better,” said CAF General Secretary, Amr Fahmy.

“We (CAF) are the first confederation to use VAR in the final of the Club competitions. We did it for the CAF Super Cup and we are delighted to go a step further with the Interclubs competitions,” he was quoted in a CAF publication.
