Falcons get Former World Champions and Hosts in 2019 World Cup

Nigeria has been drawn against 1995 champions Norway as well as hosts France and South Korea in group A of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The draw ceremony held at the La Seine Musicale on the island of Île Seguin, Boulogne-Billancourt, Paris on Saturday.

 

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have made an appearance in every edition of the tournament since 1991 and reached the quarter-finals in 1999.

For the first time in the history of the Falcons, a foreign coach will guide them to the tournament.

 

Thomas Dennerby’s first world cup match as Falcons Coach will be against Norway on June 8 at the Stade Auguste-Delaune in the City of Reims.

 

The team then next faces South Korea on June 12 at the Stade des Alpes, Grenoble before they go up against host France on June 17 at the Roazhon Park in Rennes.

 

Meanwhile, Nigeria have dropped one spot in the latest FIFA ranking released on Friday.

 

The 9 times African champions are still the highest ranked African team, but they dropped to 39, while Cameroon are still second, moving three spots up, despite finishing third at the recently concluded CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana.

 

Losing finalists at the 2018 AWCON, South Africa’s Banyana Banyana climbed two places to 48 position in the world ranking and are third on the continent.

 

The three countries will represent Africa at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in France next year.
