The inclusion of Aisha Mohammed, Sarah Ogoke and Cecilia Okoye in the First Bank basketball roster at the ongoing FIBA Africa Women’s Clubs Champions Cup won’t necessarily give the Nigerian champions an edge in the championship according to Assistant Coach Chris Okoh.
Alongside Nkechi Akashili and Nkem Akaraiwe, who were also with D’Tigress at the World Cup in Spain, the Elephant girls boasts one of the most talented rosters in the championship.
Tutored by Nigeria’s assistant Coach to the World Cup, Peter Ahmedu, the Elephants Girls won the Country’s Premier Women’s League with a perfect record.
Thus the strength of the roster has earned the two-time winners favorites tag in Mozambique, but Coach Okoh almost disagrees.
Speaking with Cornerstonenewsng.comafter the team’s final group phase game that saw their record at the championship go to 4-0, Okoh said they are still working on team cohesion.
Importantly, he insists the World Cup stars who were added to buffer up the roster “are not in the same fitness level like they were at the world cup. So we’re trying to fix everything up with the limited time we have.”
The Elephant Girls are two games away from reaching a fourth final, and on Friday should make light work of FAP Basketball of Cameroon, who are 1-4 on Friday.
