Henry Onyekuru’s Galatasary drops to Europa league

Nigeria duo of Henry Onyekuru and Brian Idowu’s Galatasaray and Lokomotiv Moscow finished third and fourth respectively in Group D of 2018/2019 UEFA Champions League to confirm their elimination from the tournament.

Onyekuru’s Galatasaray hosted table-topping FC Porto of Portugal and lost 2-3 to finish third in the group and picked UEFA Europa league ticket in the process.

Porto who has already qualified for the round of 16 went ahead in the 17th minute when center-back Felipe got away from his marker and jumped to head home a fine free-kick from Alex Telles.

They doubled the lead in the 42nd after Galatasaray defender Mariano adjudged to have fouled Porto’s Hernani who skipped past him inside the area. Moussa Marega drilled the penalty in as goalkeeper Fernando Muslera dove the wrong way for the striker’s sixth goal in the Champions League this season.

Galatasaray reduced the deficit in first-half stoppage time when Felipe fouled Garry Rodrigues as he made a move on the left side of the box. That allowed Feghouli to score from the spot kick.

Inside a minute into the second half, substitute Henry Onyekuru missed a clear chance to equalize from a pass by Feghouli. Instead, Porto got its third goal in the 57th minutes, but Derdiyok scored for the Turkish when he finished a pass from Rodrigues in the 65th.

In the other Group D game in Germany, Alessandro Schoepf scored the only goal of the game in injury time to give Schalke a 1-0 victory over Lokomotiv Moscow who didn’t parade Brian Idowu.

The result means Lokomotiv Moscow missed out in Europa league spot.
