Rohr backs Iheanacho to rediscover lost form

Nigeria technical adviser Gernot Rohr backed out of form Leicester City attacker Kelechi Iheanacho to rediscover his form and play a big role at the 2019 AFCON in Cameroon.

Iheanacho, 22, has endured a torrid time with the National team after making a blistering start to his Super Eagles career, scoring seven goals in 11 matches.

However, following his recent lackluster performances in the colour of National team, he became a victim of criticism from fans on social media and even some has called for exclusion from the team.

“We have all seen how Iheanacho has been playing for the national team. He is a good player and his fighting spirit is exceptional,” Rohr told the media.

“But of late, his form has dropped. So also has his self confidence, which is very low. And when you lack self confidence you cannot score goals,” said Rohr.

Nigeria sealed her return to the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon with a draw against South Africa last week, Iheanacho, again was at a center of controversy when he couldn’t control a perfect pass from Ahmed Musa with goalkeeper just in front of him.

“He missed what would have been our first goal in South Africa. But I believe it is a temporary set-back.

“Iheanacho has a chance to regain his confidence with his club and play a big role for us in Cameroon,” Rohr added.

Iheanacho has scored eight goals in 24 matches for Nigeria since making his senior debut against Swaziland in November 2015.
