WTA Rankings: Serena Williams back in top 10 for the first time after giving birth

The 23-time major champion Serena Williams returned to top 10 in tennis rankings for the first time since taking a break to have her first child, she dropped to 491st upon her return to competition in March 2018.

But the 37-year-old after reaching two Grand Slam finals since losing to Angelique Kerber at Wimbledon and Naomi Osaka at the US Open, also a quarter-final loss to Karolina Pliskova at last month’s Australian Open.

In December 2018 Serena Williams had revealed after the drama-filled US Open final that she wants to “move on to bigger and better things” also praising the introduction of more ranking protection for new mothers on the WTA Tour.

Despite losing out on the first grand slam of 2019, Williams has said equalling Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam titles is a “significant” goal for 2019.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion’s next scheduled tournament is the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, which is where she made her return to WTA competition as a mother 11 months ago.
