The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two suspected traffic bandits that have been terrorizing road users along the Maza Maza/Mile 2 axis of the state. They were nabbed by undercover operatives of the command posted to provide security for commuters along the route.

The suspects, Okon, 32, and Ibe, 27, who had been on the watch list of the command, were arrested at the weekend while robbing a lady, Oluwatosin, around Mile 2 when traffic was heavy. They had succeeded in dispossessing the victim of her phone and other valuables before they were arrested by eagle-eyed policemen attached to Raider Team, Area ‘E’ Command, Festac Town, who had observed uneasiness in the woman’s encounter with the suspects.

A source at the Area ‘E’ Command told Cornerestone that the suspects were leaders of two gangs that have been making life unbearable for motorists and passengers as they smash vehicle windscreens and forcefully dispossess the occupants of their belongings. The source said they operate briskly and take to their heels, only to regroup shortly after.

“We have been understudying them until luck ran out on them while attacking a lady,” he said.

Police public relations officer in the state, Mr. Chike Oti, said: “The suspects, in their statements to the police, owned up to the crime, while the stolen items have been returned to the owner. To forestall incidences of traffic robbery along Maza Maza/Mile 2 and Oshodi/ Airport Road, CP Imohimi Edgal has deployed additional teams of undercover operatives and motorized patrol teams to beef up security in the area.”

He warned that the commissioner of police had vowed that anybody found harassing motorists would be arrested and prosecuted.
