2019 AFCON: CAF to announce countries in race to host tourney

The Confederation of African Football (CAF), has disclosed that the countries who have been shortlisted to host the 2019 AFCON tournament will be announced on the 15th of December.

Cameroon saw the hosting right taken away by the African football Governing body last month due to lack of progress in infrastructures and security reasons, but the new host has not been named ever since.

According to the statement on CAF’s website, countries who have shown interest in hosting the 24 team AFCON will be announced in the mid-December and inspection of facilities will follow to know their level of readiness.

This is the full statement from CAF, confirming the new development:

  • Request for Applications to host the AFCON 2019 have now been sent to all CAF Member Associations;
  • MAs interested in bidding must submit their bid books to CAF by midnight EET [Cairo time] Friday 14 December;
  • From 15 December 2018, CAF will make a shortlist announcement, request further information from bidders and make possible on-site visits to complete the evaluation of applications;
  • Once the technical evaluation phase has been completed, the CAF Executive Committee will decide the new host of AFCON 2019 which will take place in summer 2019.

South Africa and Morocco are said to be front-runners to stage the competition after Egypt ruled themselves out of the race.
