President Obama recalls time as a basketballer in farewell message to retired NBA star Dwayne Wade

Shooting guard Dwyane Wade, one of the NBA’s greatest legends said farewell in the final home appearance in front of Miami Heat’s supporters as the game ended in victory as they beat Philadelphia 76ers 122-99, and various players across the league have written homages including Former US president Barack Obama.

Dwayne Wade rated as the best shot blocking guard in NBA history after 16 years of active play, enjoyed a perfect ending, before Miami Heat’s final NBA game of the season, it had been 8 years and 65 days since Dwyane Wade registered a triple-double…he got 25 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in the final game of his career.

 

The 44th president of the United States Barack Obama who also played basketball in his childhood, honoured Wade’s illustrious career as he shared a message for Wade.

 

Former President Barack Obama was an avid fan of basketball during his presidency. His love for the game goes back to the late 1970s, Obama played on both the J.V. and varsity teams at Hawaii’s Punahou School, eventually winning a state championship in 1979 but he gave up basketball after an injury.

 

Obama’s former coach Chris McLachlin said “He would carry his books in one hand and his ball in the other,” he said.

 

“He lived across the street from the school and before classes he’d shoot baskets on the outside courts, then at lunch, he’d shoot more baskets, then I’d have him for three hours, then he’d go home, eat supper, and then be outside again shooting baskets.”
