The Son of a police Inspector, Chidi, was arrested last Sunday, after he and other members of his gang allegedly tried to rob a filling station in Aba, Abia State, at gunpoint.
It was gathered that the gang members, numbering three, had stormed a filling station on Azikiwe Road, by Ochefu Street, off St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, on Sunday afternoon, and attempted to rob the filling station attendants at gunpoint.
However, residents in the neighbourhood were reported to have mobilised and thwarted the efforts of the gang.
It was reported that on noticing the resistance of the people who came after them, the gang member who operated the tricycle with which they came for the operation sped off, leaving his members behind.
The angry mob was said to have pounced on Chidi, who tried to escape on foot, and reportedly beat him to a pulp and were about to burn him alive when some police officers from the Aba Area Command arrived at the scene, dispersed the angry mob and rescued him.
The mob was said to have handed a locally made pistol they caught him with to the police.
