Randy Waldrum sympathizes with Ghana and CIV for missing AWCON

Super Falcons coach Waldrum believes Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire deserve to be in the African Women’s Championship in Morroco.

Cameroon and Ghana missed out on the tournament, following a defeat to Nigeria in the qualification rounds.

Falcons defeated Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire 2-1 and 3-0 on aggregate respectively to qualify for the finals and keep alive their dream of a record 10th and fourth consecutive African crown.

Speaking after the draw on Friday, Waldrum admitted the qualification was a good test for his team but would have preferred to have Ghana and Ivory competing in the tournament proper.

The AWCON serves as the qualifiers for the World Cup and added that the qualification format can be better in the nearest future.

“It was unfortunate the way teams were matched up prior to WAFCON. Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire both are worthy of being in the World Cup. Seems to me, CAF would want its best teams representing Africa,” the 64-year-old sympathized.

“Having said that, those games certainly help our players in knowing what we are capable of, and re-emphasizing the strength of our team and the possibilities ahead.”
