Asisat Oshoala set for Bigger Role in Barcelona with Duggan’s Exit

Two months after Asisat Oshoala signed a permanent deal to join Barcelona Femeni, England international Toni Duggan announced her departure from the Catalan side.

Duggan who was ahead of Oshoala in the perking order at Barcelona left the club after two seasons.

She moved to Barcelona in 2017 and became a mainstay in the team that went on to win the Copa de la Reina and Copa Catalunya Femeni.

Per Will Griffee, Duggan said: ‘It was a dream come true to wear the famous colours of FC Barcelona.’

She commented further:

‘To represent one of the biggest and most special clubs in the world has been a huge honour – but I feel the time is right for me to pursue a new challenge.

‘Together with my teammates and, of course, the wonderful supporters, I was able to win two trophies and enjoy many other memorable moments.

‘A great many people have helped me over the last two years and I want to thank them all – you will always be in my heart. Força Barça!’

The departure of the 27 year-old could prove important for Oshoala, who may now step up to prominence at the club in her first full season.

Last term, the Nigerian scored 8 goals for Barcelona Femeni in 11 appearances, including the side’s first ever goal in the UWCL final.
