Ataga’s murder: Prosecution witness makes contradictory admissions during cross-examination

Prosecution witness (PW9P), Inspector Bamidele Olusegun has made some admissions contrary to his original report in the ongoing trial of an undergraduate of University of Lagos, Chidinma Ojukwu, over the alleged murder of Chief Executive Officer, SuperTv, Usifo Ataga.

Inspector Olusegun admitted during cross-examination that the information given to the court that the 1st Defendant spiked the drink of the deceased, was not recorded in any of the suspect’s documents tendered before the court.

He admitted that the dispatch rider who allegedly brought the additional loud smoke was not interacted with during investigation. Same with the alleged drug seller, a Mallam at Shitta, Surulere whom he said was an itinerant hawker who moves from place to place. The prosecution had alleged that the deceased was drugged and his drink spiked with a drug known as ROPHENOL which has the potency to knock out a person when taken.

Inspector Olusegun also confirmed that he did not find the UBA Bank statement in the custody of the 2nd Defendant; notwithstanding that it is the allegation of the UBA Bank statement that brought the 2nd defendant into the matter.

Moreover, Bamidele admitted that he did not make further inquiry whether the UBA account number in the UBA Bank Statement (Exhibit P21) existed before the date of the incident.

In a related matter, he confirmed that there was no letter from Access Bank that the Bank statement was forged or that it was made by the 2nd Defendant or disowned by the Bank.

A. O. Oluwafemi with Y. A. Sule and T. E. Oyinlami appeared for the Prosecution while J. Ezeanyim with C. Uduma appeared for the 1st Defendant; Babatunde Busari for the 2nd Defendant; C. J. Jiakponna for the 3rd Defendant and J. A. Ugegbe held a watching-brief for the Complainant.

The matter was adjourned to February 20, 2024 for continuation of trial.
