The chairman of Police Service Commission (PSC), Musiliu Smith, has advised retired senior police officers who were pulled out of the force on Saturday in Lagos to be conscious of the environment they were retiring to.
Smith, who was represented by a retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Tunji Olapini, said he was talking out of the experience and warned that the officers were retiring into a new environment different from the police.

He said: “You are retiring into a new world; the world of the police is different from the world of retirement. A lot of people are waiting for you, thinking you have money to invest. You have to be wary and careful. You have served diligently and are being pulled out of the force because you retired meritoriously. I want you to be grateful to God that you came out of the force alive and with dignity. I also want to plead with you to be faithful to your family.”

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, congratulated the retiring officers, saying that the entire force was very proud of them and advised that when they are called for advice they should not hesitate to answer.
The IGP who was represented by Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department, Peace Ibekwe Abdallah, said: “As you bow out today, the IGP, the entire police and the nation say a big thank you. You have served well and God will reward you abundantly.”

Among the 12 senior officers was former Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, who advised serving police officers not to consider money and authority as the reason they are in the force.
“I will advice that, if you are still serving as a policeman, you should remember that you are not there to make money and exert authority but to serve humanity. A policeman should see himself as an angel sent to serve humanity. You are there to defend the defenseless and the weak. You are there to give succour to the people and not to oppress them. If you don’t do all these and have the fear of God in you, you have no business of being in the force.

“I had the opportunity of serving in two complex states as commissioner of police, Lagos and Benue states. Everything is a challenge to a police officer. I was in Benue during the height of Fulani herdsmen and farmer’s clashes.
“I thank God that I met professional and dedicated officers on the ground. I have reasons to thank God and I want to declare that, if there is reincarnation, there is no better job than the police.

I will still serve humanity as a police officer. On the way forward, you should be dedicated and loyal to the people because, without the people, there will be no police. I am retiring straight to farming.”
Speaking at the ceremony, Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi of Elegushi Ikate commended the retiring officers for their service to the nation.
