Bello Ayomide Emmanuel has made history by winning Nigeria’s first gold medal at an international Sailing event, following her victory at the Open International Canoe Sprint Championship in Bhopal, India on Monday.
Ayomide had also won bronze medals in an individual event (C1 500m) and two more in the C2 500m and C2 200m team events, with her partner Amusar Blessing.
Ayomide’s historic feat was achieved on Monday (local time), in the final of the C1 200m, where both Nigerian ladies participated.
Thus, in total team Nigeria; comprising of a pair female and male canoeists, won four medals (1gold, 3 Bronze medals).
In a chat with Cornerstonenewsng.comfrom Bhopal, head of Nigeria’s contingent and Secretary General of the Canoe, Rowing and Sailing Federation, Olubunmi Oluode Ola described the historic gold as a “big occasion” for the West African country.
Meanwhile, Nigeria is also gradually building its reputation as an emerging force in outdoor Aquatic sports with impressive performances by its Para-Rowers, who took part in the 2020 Paralympics Camp in Tunisia, recently.
