The controversy surrounding the CAF Champions League title has finally been put to rest after the Confederation Of African Football CAF declared Tunisian Clubside Esperance.
The CAF Champions League second leg final was abandoned by Wydad Casablanca on May 31, after the Moroccan Club requested for a Video Assistant Referee review.
CAF claimed it had intimated both clubs about the situation of the faulty VAR.
After the Court Of Arbitration for Sports CAS upheld Esperance’s Victory last week, the Disciplinary Committee of the African Football governing body on Wednesday also declared the Tunisian Giants as the 2019 Champions, they will now represent Africa in the FIFA Club World Cup billed to come up later in the year in Qatar.
A fine of $20,000 was imposed on Wydad Casablanca for abandoning the game, an additional $15,000 was also placed on them due to the use of flares by their supporters, which reduced visibility for the players on the pitch and made it difficult for match officials to make accurate calls.
President of Esperance Mohammed Meddeb was also fined $20,000 for his unsporting behavior against the CAF President, Ahmad Ahmad.
He reportedly threatened the safety of the CAF President while the game was on hold, Esperance will also pay an additional $50,000 for the use of smoke and projectiles, and the unsporting behavior of their fans.
