Coaches need Refresher Courses but Imama is wrong about NPFL Players – Ekpo

Super Eagles B Head Coach Imama Amapakabo is facing a tough task guiding his team through to the 2020 African Nations Championship, after a first-leg 4-1 defeat to Togo.

However, it also didn’t help quell the pressure, when the Coach criticized players as well as Coaches in the Nigerian league, for lacking the ability to interpreting tactics.

The CHAN tournament exclusively features players who are active in the national championships – and qualified to play in the ongoing season –

However, the Nigerian top flight division, NPFL, had been on a four-month break and the players inactive for the most part within that period.

With Imama at the helm, the Eagles B side have lost back to back games to Togo, including a 2-1 defeat in the WAFU tournament.

Once again and this weekend, Imama will lead his team out against Togo in the second-leg of the CHAN qualifying match.

But, with chances of qualification still very slim, he will come under scrutiny still, for his comments criticizing players and coaches for the lack of football intelligence.

Reacting to the controversial statement of the Super Eagles assistant Coach, former Nigeria international Friday Ekpo said Imama’s assessment couldn’t be further from the truth.

Ekpo who also holds a coaching license argued Imama graduated with several Nigerian Coaches and they couldn’t have been poor Students.

“I want to correct an impression, Imama and many of us started here, but it didn’t take long for us to grasp the different game strategies and tactics taught,” Ekpo told www.brila.net.

“His team lost twice to Togo, and while many have blamed the players I also want us to know that the non-active league is a problem.

“Where I could agree with him is that Coaches also could use going on refresher courses. This certainly helps a lot especially in terms of understanding what new ways one can improve and players also improve Today.”
