Nigeria’s table tennis coach Bello Nosiru has admitted that Quadri Aruna will face stiff competition to win gold in the table tennis event at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
The Commonwealth Games begins on April 4 and ends on April 15 in Australia.
Quadri is the highest ranking player competing at GC2018 and Nosiru is confident the 29-year-old will cope with the pressure at the event to make a podium finish.
“There will be added pressure on Aruna, but I strongly believe he will be close to the best player come the end of GC2018,” said Nosiru told www.gc2018.com.
“He’s energised, focused and talented but understands the pressure involved with being No.1.”
Quadri, who won bronze in the team event at Glasgow 2014, will be aiming to better his best finish at the tournament.
“I believe we should expect the unexpected because all the countries have improved on their skills, performance, serving, rallies and practice routines,” Nosiru added.
“Anyone from Nigeria, India, England and Singapore is capable of beating anyone.
“There will be players with no expectations who have the capability to surprise at GC2018 and they may appear on the podium.”
Quadri will be joined by Nigerian teammates Bode Abiodun and Segun Toriola, Azeez Jamiu and Olajide Omotayo in the search for Commonwealth Games men’s table tennis medals.
