Dennis Emmanuel helps Club Brugge cruise into UCL

Dennis Emmanuel came off the bench for David Okereke and scored the match winner in Club Brugge’s 2-1 UEFA Champions League second-leg play-off match against LASK Linz on Wednesday.

Emmanuel scored a minute after his introduction to help his side secure a 3-1 aggregate victory that also sees them pick a spot in the competition proper.

Brugge were on a seven game unbeaten run in all competitions, heading into Wednesday’s game, and held a 1-0 advantage from the first-leg against the Austrian side.

It was home side who opened scoring in the encounter, through Hans Vanaken (70′) – he scored the only goal in the Austria.

Four minutes later the visitors caused a panic as they responded with a goal of their own, from the penalty spot.

Making his return to action, Bafana Bafana star Percy Tau, had served a one match suspension after picking up a second yellow in the game against Dynamo Kyiv.

He was introduced as a second half substitute (46′) and turned provider (89′) for the Nigerian Dennis Emmanuel who scored what proved the match-winner.

Today, the African quartet; including Senegal’s Krépin Diatta, will find out their group opponents in the competition.

They have been placed in Pot 3 alongside Lyon, Leverkusen, Salzburg, Olympiacos, Valencia, Inter Milan and Iyayi Atiemwen’s Dinamo Zagreb.

The UEFA Champions League group stage draw will hold on August 29 in Monaco.
