D’Tigers aiming to break 69-year World Cup Jinx

D’Tigers star Al Farouq Aminu says the team’s aim at the 2019 FIBA World Cup will be to achieve the best ever result by an African side.

D’Tigers have already booked their spot in next year’s championship with games to spare and the Coaches will look to build a stronger team than the group that qualified.

“Our goal will be to have a great run and try to achieve the best one ever for an African team at a FIBA Basketball World Cup,” the 2015 AfroBasket champion was quoted by FIBA.

Nigeria’s best outing at the World championship was in 1998, where the team won 2 of 5 games played.

However, the best performance by an African team was achieved by Egypt at the first edition of the championship.

They remain the only African team to win 4 World Cup games, with a record of 4-3 from 7 games at the 1950 World Cup. They finished 5th overall.
