Esperance Champions League win ‘not’ controversial – Lokosa replies critics

Esperance forward Junior Lokosa has responded to critics chants of a controversial win in his side’s Champions League triumph over Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca.

The Tunisian side were leading 1-0 in the second leg of the final and 2-1 overall when play was halted, and after a 90-minute delay the referee awarded the match to the home side.

Tunisian media reported that officials were aware before the match that the VAR (video assistant referee) system was not working, but the players seemingly did not know.

It is the first time in the 55-year history of the elite African club competition that a match in the home-and-away final series has not been completed.

Wydad believed they had leveled on 59 minutes when Walid el Karti headed a cross into the net. TV replays confirmed he was onside, but might have fouled an opponent with his shoulder.

However, Lokosa has disagreed with the critics, the former Pillars forward said the goal Wydad players were contesting is a clear offside effort and it should not be a big deal.

“How can they say it’s controversial? Lokosa asked.

“If they say so, it’s their own business, for me, we have won the league and the Caf champions league because Caf was present and they all watched the game, so I didn’t see anything controversial in that game, the goal the other opponent were protesting, is even an offside goal.

“Moreover, before the game commenced they called the two captains and told them the VAR machine is not working and both of them agreed, so I didn’t see anything controversial in it.

“It’s not our fault and their fault or either Caf’s fault, we are lucky we played our normal game, scored first, had it been we did not score, it would have been another different thing entirely but we scored” Lokosa told brila.net.
