Female Tennis can’t grow due to lack of coaches, Says Segun Toriola

Five-time African champion and Nigeria’s most revered Tennis player Segun Toriola has decried the poor state of Women Table Tennis players in the Country.

The Commonwealth Games gold medalist Toriola was extremely happy his compatriot Aruna Quadri claimed the 2018 Nigeria Open but he is worried about the future of the country’s female players.

The five-time African champion said Quadri’s success in the ITTF Challenger on Sunday underlined the potential of Nigerian players but efforts were not enough to sustain the progress of the ping pongers.

He said it was sad that women players were not progressing at the same pace as their male counterparts. He said the problem was not as a result of lack of talents but due to the shortcomings of the authorities.

He said one of the biggest problems affecting Nigerian players especially the ladies was lack of good coaches.

He said the ministry of sports through the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation must invest on coaching.
