MFM Queens BC had a shot at a semi-final spot in their first ever FIBA Africa Women’s Champions Cup campaign when they faced Al Ahly SC, but inexperience and quality robbed the side in Egypt.
In spite of the fight from the Queens, Al Ahly eased to a comfortable 78-62 win on a familiar ground at the Cairo Stadium Indoor Hall on Wednesday.
Al Ahly’s Kelsey Mitchell, who has averaged 25.8 in the championship, scored a game high 14 points to help the Egyptian club bounce back from a defeat in their final group game against Ferroviario Maputo.
Meanwhile the duo of Mistura Subair and Ifunaya Okoro scored a combined 20 points – 10pts each – for MFM QBC, but team showed a lack of experience on the floor.
Despite edging the Egyptian side in Rebounds (D&O), it was Al Ahly that made the most from Turnovers scoring 20pts and 34pts from Fast breaks to the Queens’ 17pts and 12pts.
The host team also showed strength from the bench scoring 27pts to MFM’s 24, and also attacked the rim more, relying on shots inside the paint – from which they picked up 36 points.
Al Ahly averaged 52.40 in 2pts from Field Goals to MFM Queens’ 34.40 and we better from the 3points range, scoring 25 percentage of attempts made to the Nigerian side’s 12.50.
For a long spell in the game – 39:13 minutes to their opponent’s 0:17, Al Ahly were ahead and held the lead.
The Nigerian side, on a three-game losing streak, will now play FAP Basketball in the (5-8) classification game on Friday at the Cairo Stadium Indoor Hall.
