Former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique beats Cancer

Former Liverpool and Newcastle defender Jose Enrique, who was told last May that he had a “one-in-a-million” type of tumour and could lose his sight, has shared his joy and excitement with news that he is cancer-free, he said he was ‘so happy’ after being given the all-clear following treatment for a brain tumour.

The 33-year-old was diagnosed with a rare chordoma around the nerves behind his left eye, Enrique, at one stage, was unable to brush his teeth or walk stairs unaided.

Enrique had surgery to remove the tumour and then had dozens of sessions of radiotherapy before undergoing a MRI scan.

In an Instagram video he said: ‘Hello guys, I just had wonderful news today. I just got back the report from the MRI I had just a week-and-a-half ago,’ he said.

Following his announcement, sports stars, club sides, Villareal, Levante, Real club Celta and others all took to their social media accounts to celebrate with the former player. Jose Enrique has thanked fans and ex-team-mates after the ‘most difficult part’ of his life.

The left-back made 127 appearances for Newcastle before a £6.5m move to Liverpool in August 2011. He played 99 games for the Reds but was released in May 2016, after which he made 27 appearances for Spanish second-tier side Real Zaragoza.
