Suspected herdsmen have shot dead nine Policemen and injured many others in an ambush at Ugheli , Delta State. Ten others are still missing.
The policemen attached to the Force Intelligence Response Team (IRT), were deployed into a forest to rescue four kidnapped victims when they were ambushed by killer herdsmen who were in their large numbers.
According to a police source in Delta State Police Command, the deceased officers and several others were deployed into a forest at Bentsiga Buplesi community in Ugheli on Monday when they ran into an ambush by herdsmen:“There were more than nine that went for that rescue operation on Monday, and only nine bodies were recovered on Tuesday. One of the officers who ran out with bullet wounds said that “the herdsmen were so many and heavily armed. They shot and killed many of us,“we are praying for the safe return of the others.”
A senior Police officer who spoke on the condition of anonymity told Daily Sun that,”we are suspecting sabotage. Our men have tracked were the kindnappers were and were going to rescue the victims but ran into an ambush by the herdsmen. We have recovered nine dead bodies of our men, but more than 10 are still missing. We can’t say whether they have been killed or they were running away during the confusion and missed their way. We are afraid for them. We are planning a rescue mission, but we are being careful,because the herdsmen are fully armed with sophisticated weapons and are in large numbers. They are prepared as if they were coming for war. As I am talking to you, we are mourning our gallant men”.
