Katsina United held on to a nervy win over Remo Stars

Katsina United survived a second-half fight from Remo Stars to win 3-2 at the Muhammad Dikko Stadium, Katsina on Sunday.

The win takes the Changi  Boys to fifth on the Group A log, three points below third-placed MFM leaving them with an outside chance of nicking one of the playoff spots.

But the Abdullahi Biffo-tutored Katsina endured a nervy end to secure maximum points.

After dominating proceedings in the first half, they switched off in the second as the visitors had a field day.

It all started well for the hosts after Remo Stars defender Owoicho Edoka handled the ball in the box in the fifth minute.

Tasiu Lawal hit the kick down the center while keeper Emmanuel Fabiyi moved to his left to open scores from the spot in the ninth minute.

Remo Stars players were all over the place and couldn’t get a grip on proceedings.

In the 12th minute, Chinedu Ajanah nodded in Samuel Tswanya’s throw-in to extend Katsina United’s lead.

Remo Stars got a lifeline in the 25th minute when Victor Chidume’s free-kick was deflected in.

Meanwhile, Destiny Ashadi was giving Remo Stars all sorts of problems in the middle of the park. In the 32nd minute, he teed up Tasiu Lawal, who rounded Fabiyi before slotting in the third.

Remo Stars just couldn’t cope with Ashadi’s crafting and passing. He played through Musa Suleiman in the 42nd minute, but Suleiman blasted wide from close range.

It was all Katsina United in the first half and the fans expected more goals in the second half, but the visitors shockingly took over proceedings in the next half.

The defining substitution, however, came just before half-time when Solomon John came on for Ekene Awazie.

Petite Solomon was a thorn in the flesh of Katsina United after the resumption. He seized the initiative in the midfield and carved out chance after chance for Remo.

It was only a matter of time before they reduced the deficit and they did in the 80th minute through Gbolahan Mustapha.

They pushed for the equalizer but Katsina had to hang in for three precious points.
