Kelechi Iheanacho happy to make VAR history in England

Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho says he is delighted to have made history as the first player in English football to be awarded a goal through a Video Assistant Referee decision.

The Nigeria international scored the first goal awarded by VAR in England in his side’s third-round replay against Fleetwood Town in the FA Cup in January 2018.

VAR overturned referee Jonathan Moss’ decision to have initially ruled out Iheanacho’s goal after he was adjudged to have been offside.

When asked about the jersey he had archived in an interview on Leicester TV, the 23-year-old said;

“It’s the Fleetwood game, the cup game – the first VAR goal in English football.

“I’m happy to be part of it and to be a Leicester player to achieve that. It’s a great moment for me.”

Iheanacho seems to have rediscovered his form this season having contributed 12 goals (eight goals, four assists) for the Foxes in 18 appearances across all competitions.

He earned a recall back to the Nigeria national team for the 2021 AFCON qualifying fixture against Serria Leone – a tie which was later suspended due to the coronovirus outbreak.
