Lawal urges Rohr to show more faith in Success and Onyekuru

Former international Garba Lawal has charged the technical adviser of Super Eagles Gernot Rohr to throw his confidence behind young attackers Isaac Success and Henry Onyekuru.

Success was invited for the last weekend 2019 AFCON qualifier against South Africa and the international friendly with Cranes of Uganda, while Henry Onyekuru was drafted into the squad for injured Odion Ighalo.

However, with Success and Onyekuru available, Rohr decided to feed Ahmed Musa and Kelechi Iheanacho in the attack against the Bafana Bafana, a decision that yielded no goal as the team only goal came from an own goal courtesy of the South Africans.

On Tuesday, the team failed to break down Uganda’s defense in a friendly encounter at Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, with Victor Osimhen leading the line again ahead of Success and Onyekuru who came on in the second half, but Lawal believes the players are good enough to earn the trust of Rohr.

“The coach should give Success and other strikers the confidence to play. Success has been doing well in Watford,”

“Onyekuru is also a very good striker but the coach must give them the confidence. If we don’t have belief in them there will be a problem. These are two strikers that can play well in attack for the Super Eagles.

“They must be given enough playing time to show their quality. The coach must work on them to get the best from them.

“Ighalo scored home and away against Libya, fine. If a striker fails to score then we start criticizing him and if he scores, he is everything. There is a time Ighalo will call it off.

“If he retires, Nigeria will continue playing just like when we retired,” he concluded.
