Leicester City Manager Explains Why Iheanacho was Subbed off Early against Norwich

Leicester City Manager Brendan Rodgers said the decision to withdraw Forward Kelechi Iheanacho in the first half against Norwich was tactical.

Iheanacho was subbed off in the 39th minute when it appeared he had taken knock, but Rodgers in his post match presser related the Nigerian’s substitution, who was also involved in a melee minutes earlier, to a game plan.

Making only his second start for the club in the premier league this season, the Forward has scored two in two and was on course for a third before he was fouled by a Norwich player.

As explained by Jordan Blackwell for www.leicestermercury.co.uk  :

Midway through the game, The Canaries kicked the ball out of play with Emiliano Buendia needing treatment.

The unwritten law dictates City return possession to the visitors, but Iheanacho played on, dribbling towards goal.

After he was tripped by Christoph Zimmermann, the irate Norwich players charged towards the felled Iheanacho, with Todd Cantwell booked for placing his hands near the Nigerian’s throat. VAR checked for a red card but nothing was given.

The situation eventually subsided and James Maddison passed the free-kick out for a goal kick to return to the ball to Norwich.

Asked for his thoughts on the incident, Rodgers said: “He totally misread that situation. The ball should go back. Thankfully nothing came of that.

“Most times the ball will be given back. It led to the situation which might have led to a red card which would have been an awkward one as well.

“They were disappointed that he wanted to try to get in and score. Young Kels, I’m not sure what he was thinking to be honest. He’s an honest boy. He’s clearly got kicked. Thankfully it was sorted out and nothing else happened.”
