Morocco Is Officially The First African Country To Introduce VAR In Local League

Morocco have become the first African nation to adopt the use of technology driven Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in their domestic football league.

The North African country will be the first country on the continent to follow the foot steps of the  European top leagues in introducing the technology.

On Saturday, the Thrones Cup semifinal match in Tangier between Ittihad Athletic Sports Casablanca and El Jadidas Difaa El Hassani marked the official use of VAR in Morocco where Casablanca won through the use of VAR.

However, the second semifinal game in Marrakech between Hassania Agadir and Maghreb Athletic Tetouan on Sunday also witnessed the use of Video Assistant Referee.

The President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), Faouzi Lakjaahad declared in February that the Moroccan Botola Pro League will witness the use VAR next season.

“Referees will also be trained for the task ahead”

“The VAR technology will be implemented to avoid referees mistakes similar to those during the 2018 FIFA World Cup”, he concluded.
