In the wake Saturday’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying cgame between South Africa and Nigeria, Former Nigeria Captain Austine Okocha, has dismissed the notion that the Bafana Bafana are Super Eagles rivals.
South Africa ran away with all three points, the last time both side met in Nigeria back in July 2017 but with the record of seven victories, four draws and two loses for Nigeria from thirteen meetings with the Bafana Bafana of South Africa, Okocha feels Nigeria are class apart.
“No, we do not see South Africa as our rivals, but we know that they are very tough opponents,” Okocha told Soccerladuma.
“Maybe the Nigerians who are living here (in South Africa) see that as bragging rights, but I do not have to go with what fans make of the game.
“I speak as a football personality, somebody who has been there before, you know. So I know they are not our rivals, but it is always a good match to watch.”
However, the 1994 AFCON winner in Tunisia added he hope his Nation can secure their place in the 2019 edition in Cameroon.
“Well, may the better team win! I want to enjoy the game,”
“I want to see a good, very competitive match. Of course, my heart is with Nigeria, but if South Africa deserve it, they should win.”
Nigeria are top of the Group E with nine points from four matches , while their Saturday’s opponents are second on the log with eight points.
The Mediterranean knights of Libya are third with four points and Pirates of Seychelles are fourth with just a point.
