Official: Cyriel Dessers To Depart Feyenoord, As Club Decided Against Signing Him On Permanent Basis

Cyriel Dessers will leave Feyenoord when his loan contract expires at the end of June, the club has confirmed. The striker will return to parent club KRC Genk after Feyenoord passed up the option to buy him permanently.

The 2021/22 UEFA Europa Conference League finalists have announced that the Nigeria international will not continue at the club beyond this summer.

“Feyenoord will not exercise the contractual option with Racing Genk to permanently recruit Cyriel Dessers. The club had until midnight tonight to raise a purchase option in the lease with KRC Genk, but has decided not to,” a an official club statement reads.

Dessers was a key figure in Feyenoord’s march to the first final of the UEFA Europa Conference League, where they unfortunately lost 1-0 to AS Roma. The striker ended the competition as the highest goalscorer with 10 goals and he also made the team of the tournament.

He added nine goals and two assists in the league as Feyenoord secured a third-place finish last term. A return to Belgium is now on the horizon, and his future appears to be uncertain, at least for the time being.

“I had a fantastic time at Feyenoord. Last year I chose this club just before the market closed and that decision has been one of the best of my career,” said Dessers on the latest development.

“The whole season was one big adventure, with the success in Europe and the wonderful interaction with the public proudly standing out. I will cherish jersey number 33 and Feyenoord for the rest of my life.”

Dessers is currently away on international duty with Nigeria. He scored his first international goal for the three-time African champions in their 2-1 Friendly loss to Mexico on Sunday.

He will hope to lead the line again when the Super Eagles face Ecuador in their second friendly on Friday before beginning their 2023 Nations Cup qualifiers campaign against Sierra Leone on June 9 at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja. Nigeria will play Sao Tomé and Principe away four days later.
